Since its formation UKOTA has enjoyed a number of successes. It has developed relationships with key opinion formers in politics and the media. Particular achievements include:
- The strengthening of the links between individual Territories and members of Parliament through the formation of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Overseas Territories.
- The organization of the second Overseas Territories Conference;
- Representations over the Dependent Territories White Paper which led to the Overseas Territories Act 2002. UKOTA was instrumental in influencing the following:-
- The right of all citizens of the Overseas Territories to obtain full British citizenship.
- The change of the name from Dependent to Overseas Territories.
- Confirmation for the first time that the first responsibility of the Department for International Development (DIFD) must be the Overseas Territories should they require it.
- Initiating discussions with the European Commission to obtain greater recognition of the diverse needs of the UK Overseas Territories.
A commitment by the British Government to a modern partnership approach as regards it relations with the Overseas Territories.
